GENERAL INFORMATION
The Moto4 Northern Cup has been the main path for riders from northern, central and eastern Europe on the Road to MotoGP™ since 2020. Racing on identical machinery for individual teams, riders aged 14-17 compete for the championship with a potential seat up for grabs in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup the following year.
Anyone from any country can compete in the Cup but it’s primarily designed to foster talent for European riders outside of the Iberian Peninsula. Across seven rounds each with two races spanning across MotoGP™, WorldSBK, EuroMoto and BSB race weekends, this is the next step for riders hoping to follow in the footsteps of home region heroes such as Moto2™ podium finisher Collin Veijer and Filip Salaç from the Czech Republic. Recent Cup alumni Jakob Rosenthaler and Lennox Phommara have had strong campaigns in the Rookies Cup in recent years and have made some Moto3™ appearances, and plenty of alumni are contending for permanent World Championship places racing in the MotoJunior paddock.
The Moto4 Northern Cup has seen cost-effective close racing around Europe since it began in 2020. Riders competed on KTM machinery with the same 250cc single-cylinder output as other series on this Road to MotoGP™ tier until 2024 when the class switched to the same Honda NSF250Rs as used across the other Moto4 Cups.
The two races across each weekend hold the same points system as in the MotoGP™ World Championship categories. Now that the series uses the same motorcycle manufacturer, the same tyres and individual team structures as seen in the highly competitive Momoven Moto4 European Cup in the MotoJunior paddock, this gives the riders insight into working with professional team setups and helps them develop skills on and off the bike to prepare them to race on the next stage, also helping to make racing a level playing field across all Moto4 Cups in this step on the Road to MotoGP™.
